Sewing Thick Natural Rubber

I thought I was going to throw the sewing machine through the window yesterday. All day long fighting with the damn machine. It would go good for like ten stitches and then start getting all messed up, building up giant loops on the bottom. Then when I would finally fix that it would go well for half a second and I'd start feeling victorious and then the bottom wouldn't grab at all! Ahhhh all day long back and forth good, bad, good, bad. I don't think I was able to finish a single item but I guess I came further in design. Some of the material is so rad I can't wait to get this new line going! AHGHH!

Sewing This Week

After catching up on orders... I think, well okay-after catching up on most of the orders I think we can start working with the new (used) sewing machine. I've never used an industrial machine but it looks sweet, really sweet. No extra buttons and knobs to fidget with which is good for me cause I get distracted. The motors on these things are so wicked they have to bolt them to the side. The one I got is old but the motor is new and it hasn't a single scratch or dents and its a lovely blueish periwinkle color.

So what should I make? I'll start with some easy little zipper pouches but really I have heaps of salvaged material to work with. All colors and types of vinyl, fabric, plastic shipping material, flat inner tubes. I need to make more inner tube wallets people dig those. I'd like to try to make some shoes, thing is, we have to be able to do it quick to keep the prices low. My thinking is that high prices and sustainability/greenery are not in the same group. Not even the same universe, uh oh don't get me started on greenwashing. These people really piss me off to no end with all the effing hype about how GREEN they are because the jet they use has recycled pop bottle cushions. Give me a break!

Oh I almost forgot; if you haven't heard we are looking for a store to open around Alberta or SE 12th, something similar to those. and...

The fabulous employee of the month award is not given lightly but this one works so hard and puts up with the most difficult employer in town that she deserves all the accolades that come with such a prestigious award... Courtney Flummoxed Otter Kintz you are the new Employee of the Month!!!

She makes the best Vegans!

New Home at Saturday Market

We got a sweet new permanent spot at the market real close to where we wanted to be. We would rather have the corner and in good time we will. We are on Front Street east side south of the Burnside Bridge... well heck here's a map:

So now we are making the HELD HELL line of goodies which include vegan floggers, whips, slappers, restraints for various body parts, harnesses, and straps of various sizes. We launched the new line at Deacon X Fetish night and had a good time, made some new friends and danced some. Of course we don't have any pictures of the goods yet but we will likely have a new web page up soon enough. In the mean time come to the next event or Portland Saturday Market to see Portland's own vegan s/m b/d gear.

Here is a local made video I found if you have any questions. All the gear is tested and guaranteed to last. Our ethic is built upon sustainability and rights for all animals human or otherwise.

Village Building Convergence

City Repair is doing the ninth annual VBC right now with a zillion speakers and workshops and delicious food (mostly) and dancing and clapping and singing along.

So why am I there? Well I may not be a hippy but I am an environmentalist and I also think the gap between them and the vegans is unrealistic. Vegans are environmentalists and environmentalists if well informed and ethically sound should be vegans. We brought along a whole bunch of "Meat is not Green" literature to freely pass out. They are seemingly scared of us the way people are at the Portland Saturday Market. Ee gad man look it's the "Vayguns"!

I realize they are serving mostly vegan food at this conference so they won't have to talk about so it's important that we show up to bridge the gap. Please come and support, it is very hard to face this adversity everyday all day long. It is exhausting.

PS. the patent system was set up by wealthy corporations to protect themselves. No way I could afford a patent to prevent evil corporations from destroying all the work HELD has done.

Tonight’s Film

Okay so tonight we will have two to choose from: Either Grey Gardens which is a crazy film about a couple of eccentric women and well it just looks like an amazing film- I don't like to know too much about a film before I see it so I imagine you don't as well.

The other is a dark and much less humorous look at another coal mining operation in Kentucky where union busting led to several murders. Harlan County U.S.A. looks like a remarkable film. I haven't seen it but the reviews appear trustworthy.

Depending on the room we'll see one of these- fun and whimsical liberty gone wild, or jaw dropping drama of worker oppression... hmmm maybe both?

This film was nominated for Best Documentary - Academy Award and has received numerous awards. It is not 'shallow' at all, but is instead a true story of one of the most heroic women of our age. It tells the events of a young girl born in the squalor of Communist Russia who came to America embracing its ideals and becoming one of he most widely read authors and philosophers in American history.
